But being considered "JRPGs" by their devs at this point ruin all of them. The Monster Collecting and Battling genre could potentially be the most amazing mechanics sandbox in gaming for player expression and gameplay choices, strategy, etc. I'm tired of new Pokemon I add to my team missing out on every one and done battle I had to fight before I could get to them, and every one of those battles being the same on every play. I'm tired of knowing of some Pokemon that are in the game and wanting to use them or having an idea for a team theme but not being able to catch what I want because some random guy is standing in the way and gets to keep me from going to a new area where I can find them. I'm tired of having to use out of game guides to find out what I can find, then still dealing with encounter after encounter of crap because something I want it a 1% encounter rate. #Nexomon extinction volt PatchI'm tired of walking repeatedly through a grass patch dealing with the battle transitions and animations just to see the same Pokemon again and again while trying to learn if something else is available in the area and what it is. I'm playing through Radical Red now, one of those "comprehensive" hacks with all new mechanics and Pokemon added, and while I haven't yet dropped it, it is honestly disappointing and tiring, not because of the hack but because of Game Freak's game design in Fire Red (and all other Pokemon games). I bounced off Nexomon and after checking out playthroughs of TemTem never started it even after being a backer and having access because they are too much like Pokemon just like Pokemon is too much like Pokemon. I don't want to say "Pokemon was never good", but people are totally off base whenever they talk about a "golden" or perfected core formula. Have always been most into it for the campaigns, so I've definitely been feeling burned out on the past 3 gens. KINDA EDIT: Also, I should make sure to mention that I reaaally don't care about Pokemon when it comes to battling/breeding/collecting at all. They've been feelin' pretty dull and repetitive for a good 7ish years now. If you wanna fly through it like every other campaign, you can, but maybe have options to engage with side characters/stories to contextualize the world.īUT ANYWAYS, in the current state of Pokemon, yeah, I have to agree. But that's where I'm conflicted, because I would LIKE for newer Pokemon games to embrace having actual plots, while keeping a sense of freedom for players to tackle them their own way. I feel like I wouldn't be as bothered with it if the narratives were less in your face and railroaded, and players were incentivized to explore and discover things on their own (kiiiinda like the older, less narrative driven games?). It's been feeling like if you're not particularly crazy about post game online battling, breeding, and the general collection aspect of Pokemon, the main campaigns are just another romp through the same formula. But the feeling of never fully enjoying any of the games since B2&W2 has been holding mostly strong (I did enjoy Shield a little more than S&M/X&Y, but honestly that isn't saying much, lmao). I dunno, I definitely have been feeling very similarly since X&Y, but I HAVE managed to finish the main campaign of every Pokemon game since. I even dropped TemTem because I just wasn't feeling it, even if the gameplay was better. The gameplay also is quite more challenging and with more depth, but that's an added bonus. Probably something that has been said too many times, but Megaten is a better "collecting" game than Pokemon, even if the new demons aren't always perfect they do have a lot going on for them and some are just plain cool in an adult way that Pokemon just will never be and that is a-ok because it is not a game for kids. 1st gen are still okay because of nostalgia probably after that, it's just not really that interesting. Sure, when I was kid they were all very collectable and cool, but other than the new ghost and dark ones that sometimes do carry some cool lore, most of them aren't. I have one more reason to add to the pile, other than the story being way too plain, the character having barely anything going on for them (incredibly, incredibly one dimensional), and the pace being awful. I definitely regret having bought the last game digital lol, even if it was for sharing.
