You add all the different parts to your cell. Build-a-Cell allows you to build a plant, animal or prokaryote cell. The Introduction describes what is available in the program, talks about cell types and gives some basic instructions. You can access the site map from there as well. There is also a menu bar at the top for navigation and assistance. The main screen is divided into an Introduction, Build-a-Cell, Cell Structures, Linking Structure and Function and Cell Specialization. In the Science Matrix, you learn all about the cell through multimedia. This program is a great option for home or school use because you can run through it as many times as you like without having to send away for real frogs or deal with that formaldehyde smell. You can also bookmark any page you like, or do a Fast Find keyword search for something specific. Click on the little arrow and you can access any part of the program directly. On every page in the program, you always have access to a menu at the upper left part of the screen. Since there is so much to learn, this makes it easy to see what you may have missed. As you visit each area on the CD, a check mark appears next to the page on the map. This is very helpful, as there is quite a lot of information packed in here. You can learn about Niches, the Life Cycle, Biodiversity, Behavior and more. The Ecology section allows you to learn more about the frog and where the frog lives. Here you can see detailed drawings and explanations of how the frog’s body functions. The Anatomy section details seven body systems, plus another option for how all the systems interact, allowing the frog to do things like move, eat and reproduce. It goes on like this, studying all the body systems, until you’ve (un)covered the entire frog. Next, you get to see the innards close up and dissect the organs. ![]() Then there is a small window that shows someone making the incision in real life. Once you’ve chosen, it guides you through how to cut the frog open. Then choose which section to dissect first: the head, the body cavity or the legs. When you click on Dissection, it takes you to a page with a frog where you can examine it from the outside. When you run the program, the main screen has several options: Dissection, Anatomy, Ecology, QuickTour and Map. The company’s first product was The Digital Frog, the frog dissection program. Print these out for a more complete learning experience. The workbooks contain all kinds of related questions and activities that accompany the programs. You can also explore each of the CDs, which gives you access to all of the text from that CD, and also a complete workbook, whose files come in many different formats. I thought this was perfect for my homeschooling endeavors. Not only would there be no bad smell and no mess, but you could dissect the frog as many times as you wanted. A few years ago, I learned about a company, Digital Frog International, that had developed award-winning software for frog dissection on the computer. ![]()
